Remembering every knockout match of the same nation in the Champions League

Paris Saint-Germain will face AS Monaco this evening in the UEFA Champions League play-offs.

The French rivals are meeting for the first time in European competition, despite it being only the third Ligue 1 knockout match in Champions League history.

The first saw Lyon beat Bordeaux in the 2009-10 quarter-finals, while last season saw PSG beat Brest 10-0 over two legs. This convincing victory constitutes the largest margin of victory ever recorded in a home-and-away match between teams from the same country.

In total, there have been 27 Champions League knockout home-and-away matches involving teams from the same country. English confrontations were the most frequent, with 10, followed by 100% Spanish confrontations (8).

There were three knockout matches in the same city, with Inter Milan and AC Milan playing each other three times, and three home-and-away matches between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

The 2003-04 quarter-final between Chelsea and Arsenal provided the first ever Champions League London derby.
